Mission Moment: Girls Rock CLT

Imagine going through life not identifying with your gender of birth. Then imagine going to a camp where you can be yourself and you are not made to feel different. That is what Girls Rock offers all girls; a place to be themselves, learn, and enjoy developing together.

Girls Rock is for all individuals who identify as female. Their focus is being a champion for gender-diverse girls and transgender youth. With the help of volunteer teachers, artists, and musicians, Girls Rock is changing the face of who is on camera, who is behind the camera, and who is telling the story. Art and music shape the values of our life, and thanks to the unrestricted grant in 2020 from the Women’s Impact Fund, Girls Rock was able to stay connected with their kids.

Normally they have a program for 100 youth over the summer, but in 2020 they had 60 participants which is outstanding given the challenges of COVID.  In addition to COVID, they had a program to address racial injustice. Girls Rock focused on teaching youth how to be an ally across all identities. Using music and film to learn how to work together to be what they refer to as “an advocate, ally and artist.” This had a very positive impact on the girls because they learned to appreciate what they and others have to offer. Focusing on the overlapping and the intersectionality of experiences allowed them to see the value in each other. Watch our Stories of Impact video here.
