What I Learned at WIF: My Summer Reflection

This summer, I have had the pleasure of working with the staff and members of Women’s Impact Fund. More specifically, I have been working on the DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) Initiative to continue the journey of the 3-year strategic plan. Being immersed in the world of philanthropy has shown me multiple ways in which individuals and institutions engage in philanthropy. Before this summer, I was unaware of the extent to which collective-giving organizations are present in the United States, let alone North Carolina. Reading “Decolonizing Wealth” by Edgar Villanueva along with WIF staff has sparked many conversations surrounding the inherent power dynamic that exists between funders and grantees. With the help of WIF staff, I have been able to navigate the power dynamic that WIF aims to break down when it comes to creating relationships with grantees. Facilitating a culture that is reflective of the Charlotte community within WIF will promote strong relationships with community leaders and organizations. I am appreciative of this environment that allows me to express my thoughts freely and without judgment. Soon after my first couple of meetings with various members, I felt empowered to share my opinions or critiques with no fear of disapproval.

I am grateful for all the members who willingly shared their resources with me and offered their support. The accomplished women I have had the pleasure of working with serve as an inspiration to me. I am empowered to pursue my passions and always encourage innovation. I will keep with me the many lessons I learned from this experience about networking, communication, and philanthropy as I pursue a professional career, hopefully in the nonprofit sector. Although all my work has been virtual, working with WIF has allowed me to better understand the Charlotte community as well as become closer to the culture and people. Engaging in DEI work has called for a deep dive into the abundance of resources available surrounding disparities and inequities present in Charlotte. Personally, I have expanded my knowledge on historical and modern social justice issues. I encourage all members to become active in WIF’s DEI work not only for the purpose of shifting the culture of the organization but also to grow as individuals. Thank you all for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful group of women!
